Camping at Uithoek near Fouriesburg

I’m on top of the world…

Bright stars, fresh mountain air, wildlife, yummy food, friendly people and a caravan… Those are the ingredients for an awesome weekend!

We haven’t been away from our house in a long time! So it was lovely to get away for the long weekend.

We were still in the Free State (as per Covid Regulations) and we stayed at a place called Uithoek which is near Fouriesburg. Uithoek has 3 big houses one can stay in and a very neat caravan park, with neat ablution blocks and chalet rooms also on the camping premises. They are “small-dog-friendly” so we could take our 2 bostons with… And they were very well-behaved… Except for being a bit rude to the other camping dogs at times.

The view from any angle at Uithoek looks like someone should be painting the scene because it’s so picturesque. The zebra and springboks wander up and around the mountain. Nate, who has just started talking, was very excited about the “buckets (bucks)” on the mountain. And in the mornings he wanted to go and look for the blues… Which he got from us speaking about the blou (blue) wildebeest.

We also went 4x4ing up and down the mountain on designated 4×4 routes. It was very pleasant and scenic. There was only one part on the 4×4 route where I could feel my heart start beating faster because I thought we might drive off the cliff. But luckily Marc was cool, calm and collected and by switching diff lock on we easily got out of the situation.

The camp food was delicious thanks to Lionel, Carol, Alta and Johan! They are professional campers and really made next level meals. For example, we ate salmon omelets, freshly baked bread, apricot glazed chicken potjie and Alta’s gourmet salad.

It was a bit cold at night and when we arrived the wind decided to start blowing like crazy (almost like the PE wind)! This made setting up the caravan’s kitchen tent quite tricky, especially because someone had to run after Leo and Nate and we also don’t want the poles falling onto them.

It was a long overdue camping weekend! I hope we do it again soon!
