Meringskloof Camping 2024
“We often forget that we are nature. Nature is not something separate from us. So when we say that we have lost our connection to nature, we have lost our connection to ourselves. – Andy Goldsworthy
I can’t believe we’ve lived in this area for so long and only just visited Meringskloof! It’s only an hour and twenty minutes from Ladybrand, and it’s the perfect getaway. The kids absolutely loved it! There was swimming, bike riding, lots of playing, loads of food, and plenty of hiking.
The hiking trails are well-marked and lead to overhanging caves and breathtaking views. (The views were amazing, and our breaths were also taken away by the uphill climbs!) At night, the stars were dazzling, and in the early morning hours, the birds started chirping. Or so I was told—I slept soundly while many others were up, especially on the first night.
On the second night, Shaun had to “magically” swap places with Jason and ended up curled up on a small kiddies’ mattress. At least he had the bird choir to keep him company while he lay awake.
Chilli was thrilled to join us for the weekend! The kids were so impressed by her hiking skills. She is, after all, about 75 in dog years. No need to teach an old dog new tricks—her old ones were impressive enough!
We braaied both nights, and the food was delicious: green salad, boerewors rolls, steak, Anthony’s famous chicken, braaied mielies with parmesan, potato salad, biltong in balsamic vinegar, and garlic bread. Yum! And of course, we toasted marshmallows and made s’mores. Thanks for the Nutella, Hannah!
