A Traveling Inspiration

“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” St. Augustine

Some people inspire me to live life to the fullest. Miss Arthur is one of those people! She has a practical and positive outlook on life. She stays fit and makes her life fun and interesting.

I still call her Miss Arthur because she was my teacher in Standard 3 (grade 5).  She is one of my mom’s good friends. They regularly hike together and she even gets my mom to boogie-board in the summer. So I am always updated on her latest adventures. I hear she is even doing art classes now!

Miss Arthur has traveled the world! It’s always so interesting hearing where she has been and where she is going next. I decided to ask her some questions about her travels:

How many places have you traveled to and which destinations stand out the most for you?

I have reached the milestone of 50 countries. Europe was the first continent that I visited and have been to virtually every country in Western Europe.  I have also travelled through Africa extensively. Those are without doubt my two favourite destinations. I have also been to North America, Asia and Oceania.

What initially inspired your passion for travel? What age were you when you traveled for the first time?

I have always been very curious and loved learning about the world and reading about adventurous people and explorers. My favourite subjects at school were Geography and History and I especially loved studying maps and doing projects about countries.  I first travelled abroad when I was 27 years of age and spent seven amazing weeks travelling around Europe and UK with Contiki seeing all the wonderful sights that I had dreamt about. I loved meeting, talking to and sharing experiences with people from different countries. The travel bug really bit then!

Do you have any tips for travelers, especially those who are new to exploring different parts of the world?

I have always been a solo traveller, so as someone new to travelling I would suggest joining an Intrepid or G Adventures tour. They are small group tours where you will meet like minded people and can relax and enjoy yourself whilst the leader manages the logistics.

What do you enjoy the most about traveling? Are there any particular moments or experiences that bring you joy?

I am always at my most happiest and fulfilled when I’m travelling.  Exploring new places, meeting interesting people from all walks of life, absorbing different cultures, eating local foods, taking in the sights and sounds always fills my tank.

How do you choose your travel destinations? Do you have a bucket list of places you still want to visit?

After visiting 50 countries I don’t have a bucket list any more. I trust the travel ‘gods’ will lead me to where I must go to next. Inevitably it’s down to the cost and visas.

Can you share a memorable story or experience from one of your trips that had a significant impact on you?

Travelling through Africa has had an incredible impact on me and many others will agree.  Africa has so many layers and is incredibly rich in its landscapes, wildlife and people. There is just so much warmth, heart and soul in Africa, something I have experienced nowhere else. Gorilla tracking in Uganda is a significant highlight.

What are some common challenges you face while traveling, and how do you overcome them?

Flying has become tedious, so getting to my destination is now challenging. Economy class is so cramped nowadays, so I always make sure I book an aisle seat. Using public transport, especially trains for the first few times is challenging because I am unfamiliar with it and stress about getting off at the right station.

Do you have any packing tips or essential items that you always bring with you on your travels?

My carryon luggage always has a bit of everything in it, so if I don’t see my checked in suitcase again, I’ll be okay for a while. My essential item is my washing line and pegs.

What’s your next planned trip, and what are you most looking forward to about it?

A local trip, 5 days slack packing, Walking with the Whales hike from Arniston towards Hermanus. I always enjoy walking trips as they are full of surprises and adventure.

How do you maintain a balance between exploring new places and taking time to relax during your travels?

When I book a trip I usually spend most of the time on a tour, but I always like to spend a few days before or after the tour on my own when I can relax and explore on my own.

How has traveling changed your perspective on life and the world?

One develops a different perspective and discover things you have never seen before. You become more open-minded and tolerant of the world and people. Travel is a metaphor for life, it makes us more aware, braver and freer.

Can you recommend any books, podcasts, or resources that inspire your travels?

There is so much one can find online to assist with research. I use TripAdvisor, Booking.com and watch YouTube videos. I also get inspiration from friends and past travel buddies.

What advice would you give to someone who dreams of traveling but feels hesitant to take the plunge?

My motto in life is ‘just do it and have no regrets’. The world is not a scary place and people are always willing to give assistance to travelers. Challenge yourself, travel light and always have a backup plan.

In your opinion, how can traveling contribute to spreading joy and positivity in the world?

A quote by St Augustine that inspired me from a young age:” The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.”  I would say read that whole book, go experience new things, challenge yourself and meet people from different cultures. When you put yourself out there you’ll find much joy and positivity in yourself and in the world around you.

Thank you so much for sharing this, Miss Arthur! Your active lifestyle, sense of adventure and positive outlook on life is very inspiring! I love that you live by your life motto of ‘just do it and have no regrets.’ I’m going to remember the washing line and pegs to ensure I can travel light in the future!
