Berg Chalet at Uithoek

“It’s not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves.” — Edmund Hillary.

How cool is this!? The mountain is not only outside but also inside our chalet!

For Marcus’s birthday this year, we decided to take a short trip to Uithoek in Fouriesburg.

We had seen photos of the rock built into the chalet and it immediately caught our attention. It felt different, and we were curious.

The weekend turned out to be deeply relaxing. The Berg Chalet has an incredible view, and at night the stars are unreal. You do need a 4×4 to get there, which adds to the sense of being properly away from things. The kitchen is simple but well equipped, with a fridge, microwave, and gas stove, and the chalet runs on solar power.

There is something special about the rock inside the chalet. Whether you call it energy or atmosphere, it has a calming, grounding effect. The chalet itself is beautifully built, with clear attention to detail throughout.

We spent our time braaing, listening to the rain, reading, swimming in the dam, and doing some 4×4 driving.

Protea trees were scattered all over the area. My plant app identified them as king proteas, though I will admit I am no protea expert.

It was one of those weekends that leaves you feeling rested in a real way. We will definitely be back to stay at the Berg Chalet again. A highly recommended place to stay!

View of our chalet from the other mountain
From a distance. What a view!
You need a 4×4 to get to the berg chalet… and courage (Marcus said it wasnt scary at all but I’m not sure I would want to drive)

We have camped at Uithoek three times before.  Here is a blog post from when we camped there in 2020!

Lots of pretty fauna and flora
The berg cabin can sleep 5 people.
There are springbuck, zebra and ostriches walking around. I could watch the springboks while showering!s
A soft place between a rock and a hard place
Near our cabin there’s this dam.  We swam in it.
The berg chalet view from the entrance.
We will, we will rock you.
I think this is a joke.
Luckily I’m not that scared of spiders anymore, because they really like the berg chalet.
A pretty rock pile
I managed to keep my eyes open for a second…it was just too bright
Rock in the shower. I climbed through that window. The door got jammed and I shouted for Marcus but he was sitting too far to hear.  Luckily I took my clothes with me into the bathroom.
I couldnt keep my eyes open so Marcus closed his eyes too.
The rock on the outside which is also on the inside.
Climb every mountain, till you find your dream
