“One must have compassion for one’s fellow man. (‘n Mens moet deernis hê vir jou medemens.)” – Oumie’s life advice

Our Oumie Chrissie is 80 years old today! And her birthday celebrations are just getting started!

I was looking through photos of us and Oumie to use for this post… And there were so many! Oumie is such a big part of our lives. She comes to every special event which she is able to and even dresses according to the theme (if there is a theme.) She makes us all feel very loved.

Oumie is not the most talkative person in the room but she listens well, is incredibly sharp and very witty! She has such a good sense of humour! When she is around there is bound to be laughter.

Oumie is genuine. She knows what she likes and doesn’t like but is also willing to try something new. She is always game for some fun. She’s been to a few beer festivals with us!

She is considerate of other people’s time and emotions. She has a very caring and kind heart.

Oumie takes her time when eating! Something I need to do more! I tend to gobble my food down in a few gulps.

Oumie was one of the first people I knew with an IPad! This granny is modern and high-tech! She really knows a thing or two about computers and mobile devices. When she doesn’t know, she is able to figure it out!

Oumie Chrissie is an awesome, fun and inspiring woman! I am so fortunate to have her in my life.

I asked Oumie to answer some questions about her life and life in general…

  • Is there something special that stands out that you remember about your parents or/and your grandparents?

Ek onthou my ouers as opregt, eerlik en liefdevol, veral my ma. My ma se pa is oorlede toe sy nog baie jonk was, en my ouma was n vroedvrou (midwife) – het selfs vir my en my ouboet “gevang!” Ek was agt-en-n-half jaar oud toe my kleinboet gebore is. My oupa het in die goudmyne op die Rand gewerk en het myntering opgedoen in daardie tyd, maar is dood as gevolg van n hartaanval. My ouma was op n stadium wasvrou vir mense nadat sy en my oupa uitmekaar is. Harde werk, daar ook! Ek het tydens my laaste drie skooljare by haar gebly in Pietermaritzburg.

  • How did you get to school?

  • How old were you when TV came out?

  • Do you think the moon landing was real?

  • What was your first job?

  • What age was your favourite age to be?

My gunsteling ouderdom, dink ek, was… Ek weet nie! Daar is so baie gelukkige tye in my lewe, heelwat hartseer en teleursteltye, maar dit was vrek lekker op 19 om verlief te wees…!

  • What is your favourite food to eat?

  • What life advice would you give to younger people?

Baie geluk my oudste en jongste swessie. Geniet jou dag. Jou Boetietjie!
