Berg Chalet at Uithoek
“It’s not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves.” — Edmund Hillary.

For Marcus’s birthday this year, we decided to take a short trip to Uithoek in Fouriesburg.
We had seen photos of the rock built into the chalet and it immediately caught our attention. It felt different, and we were curious.
The weekend turned out to be deeply relaxing. The Berg Chalet has an incredible view, and at night the stars are unreal. You do need a 4×4 to get there, which adds to the sense of being properly away from things. The kitchen is simple but well equipped, with a fridge, microwave, and gas stove, and the chalet runs on solar power.
There is something special about the rock inside the chalet. Whether you call it energy or atmosphere, it has a calming, grounding effect. The chalet itself is beautifully built, with clear attention to detail throughout.
We spent our time braaing, listening to the rain, reading, swimming in the dam, and doing some 4×4 driving.
Protea trees were scattered all over the area. My plant app identified them as king proteas, though I will admit I am no protea expert.
It was one of those weekends that leaves you feeling rested in a real way. We will definitely be back to stay at the Berg Chalet again. A highly recommended place to stay!

We have camped at Uithoek three times before. Here is a blog post from when we camped there in 2020!
