Our weekend at Amanzi Private Game Reserve

Looking for an African bushveld adventure for the family? Amanzi Game Reserve in Brandford! It’s about a 40 minute drive from Bloemfontein.

We enjoyed a much needed weekend away. I think the outdoors and sunshine did us good.

We camped in a tent and the kids slept with Oup and Dakkie in their caravan. Amanzi Resort also has chalets, family apartments and beautiful function venues with great views.

Their camping site is very neat with clean and well maintained ablution facilities. Every camp site has its own braai facility, water and electricity supply. Remember to take closed shoes for the kids because there are thorns… A lot of them.

Amanzi has a very beautiful restaurant at reception. That’s where we watched South Africa win the rugby on the Saturday evening.

As usual, we took so much food we could have stayed a week longer. We ate lekker braaivleis and Johan made a delicious oxtail pot. The kids (and adults) enjoyed braaing marshmallows for pudding! And we made s’mores! Yummy!

We went on a guided cycling safari! That was a nice experience. I was so nervous for cycling because I haven’t been on a bicycle in ages… I managed… eventually… after Marcus adjusted my seat a bit. (And also when I imagined that a lion was chasing me.) While cycling we saw giraffe, zebra, birds and a lot of different buck… I know now what a lechwe looks like. We took our own (borrowed) bikes but actually Amanzi has bikes you can use.

The next day we went on a classic safari drive. Leo and Natey really enjoyed looking for the animals. After the safari they took us to see the lions… Mufasa, Sarabi, Nyala and 2 cubs. On our first night I heard Mufasa roaring in the middle of the night… An amazing and terrifying sound.

Marcus, Alta and I did a 5km hiking trail. We were hoping to see some antelopes up close but we only saw 2 and they were quite far away. Still an enjoyable walk.

There are enough activities at Amanzi to keep you busy, and it’s also quiet and peaceful if you just want to relax.

We had a lekker weekend!

We left our sorrows on top of that hill.
The view reminded me of the start of The Lion King when they sing Circle of Life… Rafiki holding up Simba
